Symbiosis International University’s mission is: ‘Fostering spirit of national development’, ‘instilling sensitivity amongst the youth towards the community’, ‘contributing towards knowledge generation and dissemination’, and ‘promoting ethical and value-based learning’. The Legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA was established with the aim and objective to serve legal aid, through human resource, knowledge resource, & infrastructural resource, to those who need it the most, purely on pro-bono basis’. It is a blend of legal duty (as laid down under Rule 31 of Bar Council of India’s Rules of Legal Education, and Rule 11 of Schedule III of the said ‘Rules’) of the Law School along with the overarching mission of the Symbiosis International (Deemed) University.
The Legal Aid Centre strives to: do its utmost to help people access their rights under Articles 21 and 39A; engender sensitivity and empathy, not sympathy and pity; help the silenced find their voice, not speak for them, and recognize their agency; raise awareness of the intersectionality of legal rights abuses; and work with communities and NGOs at the grassroots level to effect substantive change.
In order to facilitate greater agency and self-sufficiency amongst the populace, the Legal Aid Centre holds multiple awareness drives, targeting the intended demographic with not just personal interactions, but also through pamphlets and posters in multiple languages, art, drama, and various other interdisciplinary modes.
Oftentimes, mere knowledge of a person’s rights does not suffice and will lead to a mere formal equality. In order to effect substantive change and affirmative equality, it is imperative to engage with communities at the grassroots level and foster education, sensitivity, and awareness through a variety of drives and campaigns.
The members of the Legal Aid Centre are expected to step in to offer assistance to people who may have had their voices snatched from them. In order to do so, they must be sensitised to prevailing legal issues and imparted with appropriate training so that they are capable of drafting documents like complaints, RTIs, affidavits, etc.
Persons in need of assistance, depending on the situation, will be given core legal aid. This will include the dissemination of information and advice as per legal provisions, ensuring access to legal forums/authorities, presenting the case of such persons before legal forums/authorities, and similar activities.
The Legal Aid Centre is headed by a Full Time Faculty member as ‘Administrator-Legal Aid Centre’. The Administrator through selection process selects and appoints ‘Volunteers’ and ‘Paralegal Volunteers’ to be overseen by an executive group consisting of a ‘Convener’ and two ‘Co-conveners’. The Legal Aid Centre is overseen by the Director, Symbiosis Law School NOIDA.

The festival of Diwali is just around the corner and as of now, the status of AQI in Delhi falls under the ambit of ‘poor i.e., 201-300’. It has been observed from the past few years that this drastically changes to higher levels during the festive season. ‘Right to Breathe clean air’ is a fundamental aspect of Article 21 within the Indian Constitution. Further, in view of the dangerous condition of pollution, the Delhi government also imposed a complete ban on the storage, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers. Therefore, it becomes important to address this concern through discussion and deliberation.
Hari Phuljhari: A Documentary on The Firecrackers Ban in Delhi – Hari Phuljhari’ is a deep dive into the implementation of the Supreme Court’s orders regulating the manufacture and use of firecrackers. It explores how far the orders of the Court have been implemented and examines the systemic issues that hinder the same.
Ms. Bhavreen Kandhari spearheads several public movements in Delhi and India generally that bring desperate attention and call for action on environmental justice issues. She has facilitated the rise and management of social movement campaigns like the #MyRightToBreathe, #DelhiTreesSOS, #FridaysForFutureIndia, and #ExtinctionRebellionIndia & recently actively involved with #WarriorMoms with mothers joining hands all over the country to fight Air Pollution. Her work amplifies the digital presence of a common man's voice against air pollution, waste segregation at source, and environmental negligence in India. She supports civil society groups, subject experts, professionals, and youth to bring awareness and urgency for climate action through mass mobilisation.
