INSTITUTIONAL ASSOCIATIONS WITH OTHER LIBRARIES

Library of the Law School has institutional association as ‘Members’ with Libraries of International repute, which include British Library and the American Library since 2011.

Institutional membership entitles us with 10 library cards of the British Library and 05 library cards of the American Library. Learners, who are interested in visiting either of these libraries, may contact the Library In-Charge. Cards would be issued on first come-first serve basis. Apart from this the Law School Library is Member of Developing Library Network (DELNET) and National Digital Library of India (NDLI)

Important information about these Libraries is as follows:

A. Developing Library Network (DELNET): Law School is a ‘Member’ of Developing Library Network (DELNET) since 2011. The DELNET allows its member to search the Books, Articles, Videos, CD-ROMs, On-line Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias from database of about 1185 libraries worldwide. Library users can use these databases.

‘DELNET User Guide’, In House Publication of the Law School, which not only assists learners in carrying out search using the Guide but also permits them to place an inter library loan (ILL) request for books or a request for photocopies of articles, if you are subscribing for ILL Online. The Library will arrange the same at the earliest.

British Council Library, Delhi: British Council Library and Information Services is your gateway to a world of opportunity. As a member of the British Council Library, one gains access to books, workshops, events and activities designed specially to meet your needs and interests. In addition to the wide range of books at the British Council libraries, members can also access more than 85,000 e-books and 14,000 e-journals online.

Library is centrally located at Connaught Place, a showpiece of Lutyens' Delhi, in an iconic building designed by Charles Correa. It is a state of art library with easy to use technology that will enable you to check out and return books, CDs and DVDs with ease.

C. American Centre Library: The Library includes more than 15,000 books. In addition to collections in the social sciences, business, management, and American Literature, the Library provides information on the United States, its democratic institutions, history, and politics. Their dedicated staff provides a wide range of resources and services, offering accurate and up-to-date information on American governmental and non-governmental institutions, policies, the economy, global issues, institutions, society, culture, literature, history and contemporary life.

Location: The American Library, American Center, 24 Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi 110001 (One block from Barakhamba metro station.)

Working Hours: Monday to Saturday: 11:00 a.m. - 06:00 p.m. (The library is closed on Indian and American holidays.)

Important Security Notice: All visitors are requested to conform to security regulations and produce a valid photo Identification (ID) at the entrance. Acceptable photo IDs are: passport, driver's license, voter ID card, Aadhaar card, Permanent Account Number (PAN Card), government/ employer issued ID, or college/university issued ID. The American Center will only accept original IDs and not photocopies

D. National Digital Library of India (NDLI): The National Digital Library of India (NDLI) sponsored by MHRD and coordinated by Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, is accessible free of cost where users can find more than 64 lakh books written by 15 lakh authors in 250 languages. The digital version of the books and magazines can be read using any digital device at nil.iitkgp.ac.in. Apart from books, the NDLI website also hosts more than 6 lakh thesis by researchers from different Indian institutes, more than 4000 audio lectures, more than 3 lakh video lectures, law judgments, and more.

Library supports and benefits learners through privilege of

Text book Gifts: one for each course in every semester for the lifetime;

Book Bank: one returnable text book for each course is provided for each semester;

Home Lending: two books for 07 days;

Reference Book: Single title copy of books for reading with in campus on library card;

Study Material: Study material prepared by course in charge/s. It also houses special reference section of archive books so made available online by Online Library of Liberty.

Introduction

It is said that prior to Internet, getting information was limited and thus simple when compared with today’s means of acquiring information, especially Internet that exposes researchers or learners to seemingly insurmountable information. Neil McIntosh in his article titled ‘World Drowning in a Rising Sea of Information’ published by The Guardian on Saturday 1, November 2003 emphasised this point with the help of Research Study at the University of California, Berkeley that ‘…the amount of information being generated worldwide has increased by 30% each year since 1999, and that the amount being stored has doubled in that time. That means 800 megabytes of data- roughly equivalent to 800 books- was created for every man, woman and child in 2002’. This takes our mind to the most important question, which relates with relevancy of material as well as authenticity of the source of information or information itself, an integral to quality research. The information stored on the Internet makes sense academically only when you are able to determine what you find is authentic and thus reliable and acceptable. To conlude, you need support in finding, analyzing and visualizing meaningful results in information available in the virtual world other than databases.
